Where do I start?

I am often sent messages like "I would like to build big biceps, chest and have a 6 pack so where do I start?"

There is so much confusing material on the internet -people saying you have to start with very simple light training and then in a few months you can build up to heavier weights and so on. That is not the way I did it. I started with a good dose of common sense. I decided to workout in such away that would cause my body to respond the best and fastest. I knew enough that light weights with high reps are great for getting the muscles working, but will only build them to a limited degree. I also knew that heavy weights would mean that the muscles would have to work really hard to overcome the resistance and therefore that would force them to grow. I decided to use a combination of both with each training.

The results are proof enough that you can achieve a great result in a very short space of time.

 
What I found even more encouraging is the following message that was sent to me through my YouTube channel bazblog. The fact that it was recommended by a doctor in the Netherlands was mind blowing and just proved to me that with a healthy dose of common sense you can achieve some wonderful results.

I have a problem, I am 2.05 meters (6.72 feet) tall, and I've always actually had problems with my back, shoulders and neck.
I went to my doctor, who told me that I could fix it with training my muscles.
He gave me your website (http://www.buildingmuscles.org.uk) and said that the exercises you do were very good for me.
 I cannot wait until I can start your exercises.
I just do not have the equipment and that is my question.
I've looked around on the internet and see different dumbbells with different weights.
I was thinking of adjustable weights ranging from 1 kg (2.20 lb) to 10 kg (22.0 lb). There are also dumbbells that are adjustable up to 15kg (33.07 lb).
What would you recommend?
I don’t know how heavy they must be, 10kg or 15 kg?

I also had a question about a training schedule.
How do you train, every day and for how long? Do you train different muscles every day? Would you like to help me with this?

Training Correctly

You can train hard but if you do not do it correctly you will not get the full results that you are entitled to. This goes for every aspect of your life. We often do a lot of what we believe to be good, but never seem to get the end result we want. Then someone shows you something slightly different, you make the correction, and you get what it is you are after. That is why it is so important to have an open mind in life. Most people are on the right track but do not have the final finishing touches which make all the difference.

The following comment I got from a young man certainly shows this to be true.  It was not that he was not training, but he needed to make a few minor adjustments to what he was doing to enjoy better results.  Where the information came from is not important. He was looking for more. When you really want something it will come to you and often from an unexpected direction.

First of all, the biggest thank you ever for these videos, your positive attitude and clear & simple instructions have inspired me for some time already. I've been going out on gym for about a year now, and less than 4 months I've been trying to get my body a bit bigger, after the 8 month period of basic endurance training.

Change has to take place on the inside. You cannot have what you cannot believe. There is a process that you have to go through before any change will happen.

You have to first want to change. Then you have to decide what the change will mean to you. Then, make sure you can see what the end result and how you will be in your mind. Then, make the decision and take the first step. Every day is a journey and you may as well make it one you have chosen and for the right reasons.

Six months ago, I was 31, completely out of shape, supposedly in the prime of my life but was eating and drinking my way to the grave. I was 92kgs with a 39 inch waist and believe it or not a 38 inch chest. I was the perfect V shape - only inverted.
Your videos were one of the catalysts that shook my out of my lethargy. Today my waist has gone down to 34; I have a 42 inch chest, my weights gone down to 81. I play rugby with guy’s way younger than me and my cardio today is running uphill with a 20kg backpack as compared to walking up the stairs which killed me six months ago.
I just wanted to say thank you,.. You sir, are an inspiration and I shall continue to track your videos for guidance and inspiration.

there are many people out there, low on self esteem , low on drive, people like me who hate what they see in the mirror , what they see beyond the mirror , in their eyes. Physical fitness is a way out of that. When you’re pushing your body way beyond limits that you thought was not possible you discover things about yourself. .there’s rage, hope, determination... In a way you become - indestructible, and you look good in a T-Shirt as well .lol

This should be enough to make anyone want to go to the gym and train. In fact, enough to make you want to change areas of your life that you are currently not happy with. It will certainly happen if you make the decision to change and you believe you can. I work with people all the time who want to change but are unsure how to. Changing your life can be the most rewarding thing in the world for most people. Every now and again you will see something that is really inspirational that will impact on how you think about things in the future. This message below, that I got from a young man, is just such a message. It has just highlighted how a young person can help others to make a difference in their lives. There is so much fault finding and negative information going on in the world today that this is a breath of fresh air. It has certainly spurred me on to train even harder and to make an even bigger commitment to my life and hopefully I can help and influence a lot more people to make a positive change in their lives.

Changed my life!

Dear Baz, you have sent me advice numerous times to try to help with why I wasn't feeling sore the next day, you were even so kind as to send me your workout schedule. I had always been working out with proper form, but after I had watched your videos I started working out and doing reps even slower, like the way you do them. It TOTALLY WORKED! I felt sore like never before; I just love that feeling! It was because of your videos on YouTube that I changed my life. I had always enjoyed working out, but often times didn't feel up to it. With lack of consistency, I started losing muscle tone, and getting a belly. I ate junk food more, and was an online video game junkie, along with the video games that hook up to the TV (Xbox 360). With all your caring advice and support, I now workout 6 times a week, and have learned so much. I have increased from 12 in a half inch arms to almost 14 inch arms, and have set the goal to make my arms 17 inches all around by the time I am an adult. I started feeling spectacular after working out, and decided to stop playing tons of video games, and do something active to compliment my new found body. I tried out for My High School Flag Football team, and MADE the team! I know you may not be totally familiar with football because in England football is what we call soccer here in America, but I digress, sports are sports. Because of football I have discovered my abs as they are starting to show up on my stomach. Without your help I would still be playing video game football, instead of the real thing. I would probably be a fat teenager, and have no life. It was because of you that I started working out, and because of that, that my confidence levels went up. (I keep my ego in check though)
Because I workout and am so active I now can enjoy playing a LITTLE bit of video games, and eating junk food OCCASIONALLY and know that I won't pay for it. You also gave me your diet plan, which has helped immensely. It helped keep the fat off around my stomach, to pave the way for my abs. After eating healthy food so much, I now find that I actually do not like some of the junk food I used to like, such as potato chips.
One the things I admire the most about you, is that you seem to be a really nice guy, with a fantastic attitude towards life. I may only be closing in on 17, but you inspire me to stick with working out, so when I come to your age, I too can look like I am 35 and be as strong as you!
You have really helped change my life around from rock bottom, to its highest peak...so far. I feel like I am on top of a mountain, and I intend to stay there. I contacted this young man to ask if I could use his testimonial on my site. It is not often you can make a big impact on a young man. Most youngsters of the age 16 to 19 have all the answers and know more than anyone else. I know I was one and have had 2 sons go through that age. This type of inspiration is enough to get the laziest person up and training. If a young man can change his habits and start making a success of his life there is room for all of us to improve. It is all about making a decision and then committing to it. It will not happen overnight but in a very short space of time you will see some results and that goes for any area of your life. We are results orientated individuals. Striving for something gives us purpose in life and making it all worthwhile.
